Hailing all the way from the motherland, WKMT-DB DAGR8FM presents the up and coming international sensation "Nuw". Originally from Nairobi Kenya, Nuw, born Brian Kangethe, emigrated to Canada around the turn of the century. He was raised in a very traditional African household with very strict parents that always stressed the importance of academic excellence. Whenever he found the chance to get his head out of the school books he would dive into the wonderful world of music. From the tender age of eight years old Nuw was exposed to the likes of legends such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, are Lauryn Hill. This was the foundation of his love affair with music that was later cemented when hometown hero Drake broke out onto the scene. All of these artists influenced Nuw's development heavily along his musical journey.
When making music he draws from the dynamic lyricism and wordplay of many of the hip hop artists from the old school and add nuances and cadences derived from New age artists currently on the scene. The result is a music that has depth, figurative language, content, and knowledge well beyond Nuw's years. This is evident in one of the tracks "Intro (Flex)" off of his recently released self-titled EP. In this particular track he talks about many of the trials and tribulations that he's faced along his journey through life like superficial friendships, mental health issues as well as childhood trauma.
As he continued making music, his fan base and outreach grew immensely. So much so that during his senior year of high school he expanded his music pursuit to the professional level. What was initially just a hobby used as a therapeutic outlet became a burning passion that has yet to show any signs of dwindling. Through his music he aims to convey the importance of individuality. Staying true to yourself and not conforming to outside influences are keys to standing out. Raw authenticity goes along way.
On the horizon are many new projects in the works by Nuw himself. Aside from his self-titled EP released earlier this year he is currently working on new singles as well as features that will be released in 2021 and has even been entertaining the idea of creating another EP set to release in quarter four of 2021 or the first half of 2022. Nuw is definitely an artist to be on the lookout for in the near future. Young, humble and hungry for success, Nuw will definitely continue to impact the hearts of many for years to come.
